The floating onions, having grown for hundreds of years, were infected by a certain variety of bacteria, who produced hydrogen as a waste product. The onions eventually lost enough interior mass that was quickly filled with hydrogen that they tore themselves loose from the ground and started floating where the interior and exterior air pressure was equal. The onions eventually fossilized into a form of red graphene, and remain floating where they have for the past 3,000 years.
